'S-VHS' starring Kelsy Abbott and Adam Wingard - trailer review

S-VHS Directed by: Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Jason Eisener, Gregg Hale & Eduardo Sánchez, Gareth Evans & Timo Tjahjanto Starring: Kelsy Abbott, L.C. Holt, Adam Wingard Rating: Not Yet Rated Release Date: TBD

Trailer Score: 5/10

Thoughts by TSR: I love a good anthology, so it seems like this and its predecessor (last year's V/H/S) should be right up my alley. For whatever reason, though, I couldn't muster up enough excitement to actually sit down and watch the previous installment. I was already feeling more inclined to check this one out thanks to contributions from Hobo with a Shotgun's Jason Eisener and The Blair Witch Project's Eduardo Sánchez. As for the short trailer itself, I appreciate that it doesn't give away too much (I'll be less positive about this in a moment). Unless the biggest scare is some creature attacking a bloodied guy's car, the best stuff is being left for when we see the entire film.

The unwillingness to show anything isn't all good, however.  I know it's only 48 seconds, but it ends up being a bit underwhelming. Brief glimpses of zombies, creepy kids, and monsters are all well and good.  The issue is that very little of it gets me all that excited out of context. One part that does have me intrigued is the little girl's birthday party. Her scream and the chaotic aftermath is the one moment in this trailer that has me wanting to find out what's going on. I want to know what she saw, which is something none of the rest really achieved. Perhaps I'll give S-VHS a look on VOD some stormy night. I'm just not in much of a hurry.
