Plot: Gay Austrian fashionista Brüno has a talk show that gets canceled, so he decides to head to Hollywood to become famous. But he soon realizes it’s much more difficult than he originally thought.

Who’s It For? You’ve got to have an open mind although it doesn’t push the homophobic boundaries as much as I thought. You will squirm if you have troubles watching others squirm. And hopefully it goes without saying, but leave the kids at home.

Expectations: Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is one of my favorite comedies of the last decade. Those are big… Continue reading

Miracle - Blu-Ray

Miracle – Blu-Ray

image001Blu-Ray Review

Miracle

Directed by: Gavin O’Connor
Cast: Kurt Russell, Noah Emmerich, Patricia Clarkson
Running Time: 2 hr 16 mins
Rating: PG

Plot: The story of how the USA Hockey team beat the Soviet Union in the legendary winter Olympics of 1980.

Who’s It For? Fans of the game will be excited and possibly inspired by this true story.

Movie:

As much as the story of Miracle may be about the importance of teamwork, the film focuses on coach Herb Brooks as if there really is an “I” in team. Kurt Russell’s performance is certainly laudable, but in turn much of the players become nameless, particularly because while the faces may be accurate look-alikes, they are certainly not noticeable to us. Some of Miracle’s dull moments are saved by the… Continue reading

Couples Retreat – Trailer

In the movies, happy Couples are boring. At the least, they don’t tend to make us laugh. (Yes, I’m sure there’s an example somewhere that will prove me wrong). But here’s a group of pairings that are going to focus on the “fun” of “dysfunctional marriages” and (hopefully) bring more laughter than pain in Couples Retreat. Coming out this October, the comedy about friends going together to a type of relationship rehab stars Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman, Watchmen’s Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, Kristin Davis and Faizon Love, to name a few.

Call me crazy, but there’s no way that Couples Retreat could be a disaster. Despite the somewha chaotic characters of the film, the cast members are nothing but a harmonious chorus of comedy – a plethora of funny… Continue reading

Michael Moore’s New Film – Capitalism: A Love Story Opens October 2, 2009

Michael Moore’s movie has a title. We figured it was bound to happen sometime. And now America’s “love story” about capitalism has a title … Capitalism: A Love Story.

Here’s the news release …

Capitalism: A Love Story is the newly unveiled title of Oscar®-winner Michael Moore’s latest documentary feature. Overture Films will release the film domestically on October 2, 2009, and Paramount Vantage will handle international distribution. As previously announced, Moore will return to the issue that began his career: the disastrous impact that corporate dominance and out-of-control profit motives have on the lives of Americans and citizens of the world.

On why he chose to make a ‘love story,’ Moore stated that it was time for him to make a ‘relationship movie.’ “It will… Continue reading

Top 7 Johnny Depp Costumes

Top 7 Johnny Depp Costumes

John Dillinger was as resourceful a Depression-era criminal as the world ever saw. Johnny Depp is as versatile a movie star as Hollywood’s ever produced. In order to play the famously infamous Indiana-native, who took from Midwestern banks when there was hardly anything left to take, he will fittingly let his Tommy gun do the talking. That, and a killer slew of era-influenced attire.

Depp is perfect for the role. He’s as enigmatic a movie star as Dillinger was a bank robber. His leading-man looks are so often compromised for an uglification process that almost always masks the high-cheek-boned heartthrob beyond recognition. In an industry where looks are meant to kill, Depp has been able to wield an arsenal of murderous ‘looks’ that have wowed viewers nearly as much as his… Continue reading

Top 7 Drinking (Beer/Wine/Alcohol) Movies

Top 7 Drinking (Beer/Wine/Alcohol) Movies

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

In honor of The Hangover (Due out June 6) many of you will get this weekend, The Scorecard Review presents the Top 7 Drinking (Beer/Wine/Alcohol) Movies.

As always, there is certain criteria to get on this list:
1. Alcohol must play a prominent role.
2. The movie makes you want to reach for a drink.

Based on this, we’ve got some cuts to make before we start. Leaving Las Vegas you’re out. The destructive, slow death of alcoholic Ben (Nic Cage) is a sad, well-done film. Plus, adding Elisabeth Shue as hooker is brilliant casting. But this movie is about pain, and while everyone should realize drinking has a dark side, let’s not talk about that here, OK?

Also, Cocktail we’re leaving you off as well… Continue reading

Top 7 Ultimate Christian Bale Roles

Top 7 Ultimate Christian Bale Roles

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

It seems that every role for Christian Bale is a type of event. He is famously known for lunging himself into his roles, usually playing a hero (Batman) or villain (Bateman), or an obtuse mix of the two (Jim from Harsh Times). Considering his work in the past ten years, he both portrayed iconic characters (Bruce Wayne, and now John Connor) and in turn has made some of his characters iconic (Patrick Bateman of American Psycho). With each role he seems to meet his standard of impressiveness, though this could be argued against his take on John Connor in Terminator Salvation (you can read Jeff Bayer’s review here), chugging ahead with even the most lackluster of roles and movies… Continue reading

Top 7 Body Switching Comedies

Top 7 Body Switching Comedies

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

One minute you’re a pimple covered teen railing at the injustice of adults, the next you are an adult! Welcome to the improbable world of body switching comedies. Kirk Cameron and Fred Savage failed to launch film careers from such auspicious beginnings, but that hasn’t deterred Zac Efron from taking his shot in 17 Again. He’s not totally copying his illustrious predecessors, 17 Again is more of a body getting a second chance than parent-and-child-switching-places type film, but the principle’s the same. Who doesn’t wish they were an adult as a teen? What adult doesn’t consider what he or she would do differently if given the chance to be a teen again? And who doesn’t love the Continue reading

Top 7 Bromance Film Duos of the Past Decade

Top 7 Bromance Film Duos of the Past Decade

Bro-mance. (n., adj., v.)

1. Love between two heterosexual dudes that soars past regular friendship and does an intimate waltz around the line of platonic-ness
2. An alternative type of romance that, while it may at times be obstructed by women, will be rooted solely in the strong bond between two men
3. More than just friends…but not in that way

This list has been made in honor of the hilarious I Love You, Man, (go see it now!!!) but the truth is that the art of the bromance has actually existed for thousands of years; (maybe starting at Cain and Abel … or not). This special relationship has been continued by many great figures of cinema (like Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa), and the recognition continues to this very day. In Continue reading

Jaime Paglia – Executive Producer & Writer of “Eureka” with Series Premiere on Sci-Fi on July 10

Jaime Paglia is a busy man. His show “Eureka” is just two days away from starting up again. He squeezed in a couple of questions about the show. So let’s get to it.

CLICK HERE to read the previous interview with Jaime Paglia that talks about the show, Joss Whedon and I asked him some trivia questions about the show he created.

With “Eureka” starting again on July 10, if you had to pick one thing, what new storyline are you most excited to introduce your fans to?

Without giving anything away, we’ve always wanted to focus more on our supporting players in “Eureka.” I was able to write an episode for Jo Lupo that allows her to be Carter for a day. And by not having to… Continue reading
