X-Men: First Class fared fairly well over its debut weekend, pulling in $56 million domestically. However, that's about $15 million shy of many industry guru's estimates. With no other wide debuts over the weekend, it had no real fresh competition, and where $56 million is nothing to scoff at, it does represent the worst opening take for an X-Men franchise film.

The Hangover Part II was the proud silver medalist this weekend, earning another $32 million, and with $186 million already in the coffers, after just 11 days in release, it's poised to leap above both Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Fast Five (the number one and number two highest grossing films of 2011 to date respectively). Kung Fu Panda 2 exhibited pretty good staying power, and crossed the $100 million mark in just 11 days. Though it underwhelmed in its opening weekend, it has hung around with fairly respectable numbers.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides had another plunderous weekend, and sailed to within $12 million of the highly coveted accolade: the highest grossing film of 2011 (presently held by Fast Five).

Bridesmaids rounded out the top five this weekend.

Calhoun Kersten vs. Aaron Ruffcorn

Each weekend Kersten and Ruffcorn go head to head in the Box Office Challenge, trying to pick the number one film at the box office.

This weekend ... Ruffcorn Wins!

Season record: Kersten 4 - Ruffcorn 3

Thoughts by TSR: For starters, here's a recap:

Calhoun Kersten’s prediction for the weekend of June 3 – 5 …

1. X-Men First Class ($75 Million)

Aaron Ruffcorn’s prediction for the weekend of June 3 – 5 …

1. X-Men First Class ($70 Million)

Just when Kersten thinks he's gonna build up a buffer, Ruffcorn answers and stays hot on his heels. Yes, it happened again, though this one was mighty close. Ruffcorn over-estimated by $14 million, where Kersten's overestimation was $19 million. 'Nuff said!
