‘Clash of the Titans’ Might Dominate in 3D
A change is coming.
Thanks to the success of Avatar, Warner Brothers Studios is now considering releasing its fantasy-actioner remake Clash of the Titans in the popular and profitable format of 3D. (This proves that the Avatar experiment was right in hoping that people would penny up more for a third-dimension experience).
Clash of the Titans stars Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson. Neeson plays Zeus in a role made famous by Laurence Olivier when the original came out in 1981.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has ordered a 3D test of the film, and will decide by January 30th on whether it wants to release Titans in the originally planned 2D or with the enhanced 3D. Usually, most 3D films are shot from the very beginning in 3D, but there is certainly technology that helps convert 2D pictures to 3D (as like what happened with the Toy Story re-releases last fall).
If Warner Bros. does decide to go 3D, the company will also face competition with How To Train Your Dragon, the fantasy-family film from Dreamworks that also comes out on March 26th. However, when a studio insider was asked about the difficulty of securing 3D screens for Titans also, the person said “No problem.”
What do you think? Does it matter to you whether Clash of the Titans is in 3D or 2D? Will you pay extra to see the Cracken in a third dimension, or will you be seeing How To Train Your Dragon instead?

I planned to see clash of the titans when it came out, regardless of 3D or not. I think if they do release a 3D version, not many people will pay up extra to see it. Why see it in 3D rather than 2D, I know I am not going to pay extra for 3D? It just doesn’t have the same appeal that Avatar had for 3D. I mean James Cameron shot on 3D cameras and really pioneered some of the technology, and what is 3D Clash of the Titans giving us? A remastered version of the 2D with probably some lame 3D effects, subpar when compared to Avatar. It might sell well for opening weekend, but don’t expect superb word of mouth like what was generated with Avatar.
This sounds like a last minute desperate move by Warner Bros to build additional hype for the movie I read that they had to re-shoot some scenes so maybe the movie didn’t screen well. It looks like they are hoping the 3-D format will also bring in more cash at the Box office.
One potential problem, advance reviews of the kids movie How to Train Your Dragon have been good so there may be some major competition for those 3-D screens if the dragon movie is a hit.
I would have thought that Pixar was able to re-render Toy Story 1 & 2 for the third dimension, which is NOT the same as converting a 2D image to 3D. Pixar would have had the datafiles for the original movies and then it would have just been a matter of adjusting the camera angle slightly to re-render another view. If Clash of the Titans is shot in 2D, I don’t see how it can be 100% successfully converted to true 3D. It should have been filmed in 3D from the start. Avatar was filmed from the start in 3D.
