'Don Jon' starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson - trailer review

Don Jon Directed by: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore Rating: Not Yet Rated Release Date: October 18, 2013

Trailer Score: 8/10

Thoughts by TSR: This film used to be called Don Jon's Addiction, but the main character's love of porn is just one part of Don Jon (something Joseph Gordon-Levitt made clear on his Facebook when the title was shortened). The porn angle might be a tough sell for some people. It looks like it's handled well, though, and overall the trailer is very likable and full of energy.

Gordon-Levitt seems like he handled the transition behind the camera quite well. The character he's playing feels like he'd be at home on "Jersey Shore," and it kind of makes me uncomfortable how good and lived in the performance looks. All of the casting is impressive, especially Tony Danza, Glenne Headly, and Brie Larson as our main character's family. Scarlett Johansson also looks quite good. Everything from their first date to her walking in on him reading e-mail looking at porn is rather cute. I especially like both his voiceover related to their movie date and the way it goes from him talking down about people watching movies to him looking at porn.

I kind of wish the trailer hadn't given away small appearances by big stars, but they are one more reason to be interested. Of course, we didn't really need another reason to be interested considering the trailer ends with Joseph Gordon-Levitt gloriously singing along to Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch's "Good Vibrations" (Gordon-Levitt's Jon reminded me of Wahlberg at times, so the song choice is very fitting). The most relatable thing in this is easily Jon pulling up to a red light and stopping singing. It's a terrific moment to send the trailer out on, and overall Don Jon looks like a winner.
