'The Lone Ranger' starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer - Super Bowl trailer review

The Lone Ranger Directed by: Gore Verbinski Starring: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson Rating: Not Yet Rated Release Date: July 3, 2013

Trailer Score: 7/10

Thoughts by TSR: This may not be the best movie-related ad from Super Bowl XLVII, but it's the longest. That should count for something! It's about the same length as the previous trailer, and I think I like it just a bit more – even if I could do without the intrusive rock soundtrack that blares over the second half. The earlier one leaned a bit too heavily on trains while hardly bothering with the Lone Ranger at all. That's fixed here by having Tom Wilkinson do some voiceover filling us in on the masked man's back story (or lack thereof). Another nice thing is that Armie Hammer gets some stuff to do this time around. He looks the part and looks pretty cool lassoing himself off a crashing train.

Johnny Depp still appears to be giving a surprisingly subdued performance as Tonto. The bickering at the end between Tonto and the Lone Ranger isn't anything new, but both actors are likeable doing it. Even better is Depp's little smirk just before he is yanked off the train. The Lone Ranger looks big and expensive and stylish and like it'll be a little bit of fun. I'm sure Disney is hoping for more enthusiasm when it hits theaters in July, but that's as big as my praise is going to get for now.
