'Evil Dead' starring Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez - feature red band trailer review

Evil Dead Directed by: Fede Alvarez Starring: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci Rating: Not Yet Rated Release Date: April 12, 2013

Trailer Score: 8/10

Thoughts by TSR: This trailer definitely earns its red band designation. Violence and gore appear to be plentiful in this updated version of Evil Dead, and it is awfully impressive. A big part of that probably has to do with the fact that there is no CGI in the film (that’s what director Fede Alvarez said in this interview with io9, anyway). Whenever I’d look through the 2013 release schedule, this film never jumped out at me as something I wanted to see. Until now.

Jane Levy is delightful on ABC’s “Suburgatory,” and her presence is really the only reason that this has been on my radar at all. Now, having seen her in action as Mia, her presence is why this looks like it could be one of the scarier films of the year. I’m sorry to see her going through hell here, but it's great how she alternates between terrified and terrifying so convincingly. A perfect example of this is how it goes from her saying, “I think it’s in here with us now,” to the absolutely chilling shot that follows. The trailer also ends on a high note, with the one-two punch of a possessed Levy singing and then slicing her tongue open. I might be slightly more excited for the eventual making of featurette, but this footage is very promising.
