'Movie 43' starring Halle Berry and Gerard Butler - red band trailer review

Movie 43 Directed by: Peter Farrelly, Elizabeth Banks, James Gunn, Bob Odenkirk, Brett Ratner, and more Starring: Halle Berry, Gerard Butler, Terrence Howard, Hugh Jackman, Emma Stone, Kate Winslet Rating: Not Yet Rated Release Date: January 25, 2013

TRAILER SCORE: 2/10

Thoughts by TSR: Oh boy, this thing sure has an amazing cast! I mean, we have Emma Stone, Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Liev Schreiber, Naomi Watts, Halle Berry, Chris Pratt, and so many more! It’s a veritable cavalcade of actors I really like. Unfortunately, other than the faint praise of saying the Schreiber/Watts/Jeremy Allen White stuff elicited a small chuckle, I don’t have much else positive to say.

Movie 43 wants to be the raunchiest comedy around, talking a big game and thinking it is breaking all the rules. Intertitles boasting that it’s unexpected, unusual, uncensored, and unbelievable are not backed up in the slightest. Well, except uncensored. There is some language. Ooooh, how daring. And it’s anything but unexpected. The Terrence Howard segment with the black basketball team is nothing but the easiest, most tired “joke” imaginable. One segment that doesn’t get a lot of time features Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet. That's a pairing I'm interested in, though even it is marred by the knowledge of what the joke will be (something that is CGI’d out of this). Still, seeing these serious thespians having a bit of fun could be amusing enough.

Nothing else is remotely appealing about this trailer. Perhaps one day I’ll check out some of the shorts (at least the ones directed by James Gunn and Bob Odenkirk), but this has turned me completely off Movie 43.
