'Insidious' starring Patrick Wilson - trailer review

Insidious Directed by: James Wan Starring: Ptrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Barbara Hershey Rating: PG-13 Release Date: April 1, 2011

TRAILER SCORE: 7/10

MY THOUGHTS: I've been waiting for Insidious for a long time. I remember first hearing about the project last summer or so and I've been waiting for a release date ever since. Luckily, the time for Insidious has come.

What's nice to see about this movie is a return to atmosphere. Sure, you hafta make it through the whole "Insidious is insidious" nonsense which, might serve a purpose in the movie, but just annoys me here. After all, you're only giving me a little under 2 minutes, let's not waste precious time!

But the trailer gets back on track. There's enough of a story there to be able to get from point A to point B, but it never seems to give too much away. I think a large portion of this trailer's success is Wan's ability to hold his cards close to his chest. I feel like I know what the movie is, but I don't trust its simplicity. There's got to be something more... right? It's that uneasiness that keeps this trailer going.

Still, there's a palpable tension in the way that the trailer itself is cut too. The editor seems to know how to play the silence off of the scares to create a rich combination of tense silence and jump scares. After all, a good horror movie is able to do both.

It's too early to say what kind of movie Insidious will be, but with this trailer and the skillful direction of the guy who brought us the first, and thankfully only the first, Saw movie, I have high hopes.
