'How Do You Know' starring Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd - trailer review

How Do You Know Directed by: James L. Brooks Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson Rating: NR Release Date: December 17, 2010

TRAILER SCORE: 4/10

MY THOUGHTS: It's a shame that this movie doesn't look too promising since I'm a fan of most of the cast. I mean, sure, Reese Witherspoon and I have had our differences in the past (Legally Blonde 2) and if they could take away someone's Oscar retroactively, she might be in some trouble, but when it comes right down to it? She's cute and plucky and that's usually all it takes to sell a rom-com. Still, it's weird that this is a romantic comedy and within the first 30 seconds of the trailer she's already crying on two separate occasions. Call me crazy, but that's not too funny. That's just angst. In fact, the only one who really shines in this trailer is, of course, Paul Rudd. He's the only one given anything funny to work with and even then, it's still kind of a downer. By the end of the trailer it isn't exactly clear if anyone in this movie doesn't fall into the category of "pretty people with big problems." Once again, I can't help but ask, where is the comedy? There are moments where they at least go for it, which is a good sign, but nothing was too memorable to make me actually laugh. It just looks angst-y and forgettable, which makes me hope that they come out with a better trailer for this movie before its release in December. And I didn't mention Jack Nicholson at all because my hunch is, he's barely in it.
