'The Joneses' starring David Duchovny - trailer review

The Joneses Directed by: Derrick Borte Starring: David Duchovny, Demi Moore, Amber Heard Rating: R Release Date: April 16, 2010

TRAILER SCORE: 7/10

MY THOUGHTS: I remember hearing great things about The Joneses (not to be confused with the horror movie of the same name due out later this year) when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival back in 2009. I admit that I’ve been waiting for a trailer ever since, and it’s finally here. The bad news? It seems my expectations proved a little too much. It’s got a great rhythm to it in terms of editing, but that can’t save what seems to be a flimsy script. It started out strong with a sharp comedic edge. I was really attached to the whole anti-consumerism, dark comedy aspect of it, but then about halfway through, the trailer bails on that. It segues into what appears to be a predictable romantic comedy between two attractive middle-aged folks. I have no qualms there, but to see this movie (or maybe just the trailer) pander to it was a little disappointing. After watching the trailer, I’m a little worried about the direction the movie will take, but I’m hoping against hope that it’s the studio in a desperate, and ironic, attempt to draw more people in with this kind of lowest common denominator trailer.
