My Time Will Come

cuando me toque a mi cartelQuickcard Review My Time Will Come (Cuando Me Toque a Mi)

Directed by:  Victor Arregui Cast:  Manuel Calisto Sánchez, Ramiro Logroño, Randi Kraup Running Time: 1 hr 30 min Rating: Not Rated Release Date:  December 4, 2009

PLOT: A coroner in Quito, Ecuador comes in contact with a lot of dead people, but has a hard time maintaining relationships with the living.

WHO'S IT FOR? People who like foreign films and aren't easily depressed.

OVERALL

Dr. Arturo Fernandez (Sánchez) works in the city morgue where he has a good rapport with the dead.  This is lucky because in the course of the film he's going to meet a lot of dead folk.  Outside of a horror movie you'd be hard pressed to find a higher body count.  The film starts with a man mysteriously murdered in a back alley and that's only the first of a series of interconnected accidents.  Everyone ends up on Fernandez's table, and he sort of works to pull them together, but not terribly hard.  MTWC is based on a novel and presumably that allowed characters to be fleshed out a little more.

The film looks nice, it's mainly shot by handheld cameras and the city looks pretty interesting.  I'm not sure I've ever seen an Ecuadoran film before and I'm not familiar with the city of Quito, but it looked pretty cool.  This is Arrugi's second film and it shows promise, but it's missing some cohesive elements.  It took me too long to determine who the lead character was, I kept getting involved with people who died, but they died too early in the film for me to have any emotional connection.  It's too bad because technically the film is fairly proficient.  I just needed to care more.

FINAL SCORE: 6/10
