Thor won out at the box office for a second consecutive week, with a $10 million margin over the 2nd place, Bridesmaids.  The raunch-comedy fared very well considering it's ensemble cast of relative nobodies.

Fast Five, in its 3rd weekend, proved impressive once again, and stretched it's (highest grossing film of 2011) lead over Rio, out to $44 million. It will likely take this Friday's Pirates of the Caribbean installment to dethrone Fast Five from number one.

In fourth place, newcomer Priest brought in just $14.5 million, about $3 million shy of what Legion did with its opening weekend back in January 2010 (Legion & Priest share the same director/star combination in Scott Charles Stewart and Paul Bettany).

Rio celebrated its fifth weekend in a row in the box office top five.  Rio was the number one film for its first two weekends in release, the number two film for its third weekend, and for the past two weekends it's held on to the fifth slot, defeating both Jumping the Broom and Something Borrowed by slim margins. Rio is hanging on to its (2nd highest grossing film of 2011) spot, also by slim margins -- $4 million over Rango, and $5 million over Thor. Rango's run is over, but Thor will certainly leapfrog Rio in the next few days.

Calhoun Kersten vs. Aaron Ruffcorn

Each weekend Kersten and Ruffcorn go head to head in the Box Office Challenge, trying to pick the correct Top 5. This weekend ... Kersten Wins! Season record: Kersten 3 - Ruffcorn 1 Thoughts by TSR: Kersten extends his lead with a spot-on prediction of Thor's weekend earnings, and an accurate silver medal projection to boot. Ruffcorn fared OK, but couldn't quite compete with Kersten's impressive guesswork.

Here's a recap:

Calhoun Kersten’s prediction for the weekend of May 13 – 15 …

1. Thor ($35 Million) 2. Bridesmaids 3. Priest 4. Fast Five 5. Jumping the Broom

Aaron Ruffcorn’s prediction for the weekend of May 13-15 …

1. Thor ($22 Million) 2. Fast Five 3. Bridesmaids 4. Priest 5. Rio

Ruffcorn's prediction of Rio rounding out the top five was a spectacular (lucky) feat, and he did also accurately predict Priest in at number four, but alas, these are minor accolades, and pale in comparison to those of Kersten. Ruffcorn put a little too much stock in Fast Five, and not enough in Thor or Bridesmaids.
