This weekend packs quite a wallop after last weekend’s duller than dirt box office antics. There are four big releases for this weekend. There’s the Judd Apatow produced Get Him to the Greek, the family-friendly Marmaduke, action-comedy Killers, and sci-fi/horror flick Splice. The question on everyone’s mind is, do any of these movies have what it takes to take that number one spot this weekend?

My guess is no. Unfortunately for Nick Allen, Shrek Forever After has a few things that pretty much promise it won’t leave any time soon. Not only is it family-friendly, but in a world where 3D reigns supreme, it’s got a competitive edge.

I’m guessing Get Him to the Greek will come in second, through no fault but its own. In a predominantly summer market, releasing an R-rated movie may kill its chances at the box office, no matter how good it may be.

Marmaduke may have a chance at number three. As I said earlier, it’s all about the timing. This movie is coming at a time where most people have already had a chance to see Shrek Forever After and there isn’t too much other stuff for families. Still, bad reviews (like mine) will keep this movie from performing too well.

In fourth place, my best guess is Katherine Heigl in The Killers. It’s got a decent shot considering all the movies out there geared towards women. I mean, besides Sex and the City 2, what else is there? This is the kind of process of elimination logic that will secure a place for Killers on the top five list.

Finally, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time rounds out the list at number five. While it didn’t perform as well as studios might have hoped, its reviews were more favorable than Sex and the City 2, which usually means more staying power.

Each week we’ll take a look at the box office and see if we can’t nail the Top 5 films (in correct order).

It’s harder than you think. If you don’t believe, let’s see what your answers are.

My prediction for the weekend of May 7 – May 9 …

1. Shrek Forever After

2. Get Him to the Greek

3. Marmaduke

4. Killers

5. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

So what are your Top 5 at the box office this weekend?
