TSRn: Director James Cameron wants a faster 'Avatar 2'

The Scorecard Review news

News: James Cameron wants to shoot Avatar sequels in 60 frames per second, urging production and exhibition industries to shift. Source: Hollywood Reporter

Thoughts by TSR: Sorry, in this case "faster" isn't talking about the action-paced potential of Avatar 2 and Avatar 3. This is insider-film geek stuff, so please feel free to ignore if you don't follow this sort of thing. James Cameron is looking at 48 and 60 fps because it gives a more truthful image. The standard is 24 frames, made even more famous by Jean-Luc Godard with his quote, "cinema is truth 24 frames per second."

Cameron "revolutionized" films with his 3D technology. While some feel 3D has already run its course, I feel it definitely has a place. Blaming 3D is moronic, blaming poor use of 3D is purposeful (yes, Dolphin Tale I am talking directly to you).

Even though I wasn't a big fan of Avatar (I had script/dialogue issues), I did like looking at the film. Cameron has a very gifted eye. If he sees value in 60 fps, I want to see what he sees. There are definitely times my that I want my HD TV to be more than 60mhz (to 120mhz or greater). I assume that's the kind of jump we're talking about. The cost issue seems to be a FX department thing, not a projector thing. That's a sigh of relief because it most likely means the jump in technology would not result in a jump in ticket prices. We'll be able to get a good look at 48 fps with Peter Jackson doing just that for the two-part Hobbit films, also in 3D.
