Tyler Perry fans - the day has come. The constantly-working writer/director/producer has just added a project to his list that is not an original project but an adaptation. The entrepreneur has just been assigned by Lionsgate to adapt For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf, a play from 1975 written by Ntozake Shange. He will wear all three caps when working on this project, and will start shooting in Atlanta this November. Lionsgate is aiming for a 2010 release.
According to Variety, "play is a series of 20 poems telling stories of love, abandonment, domestic abuse, and other issues faced by black women."
This will be the tenth project that Perry has done through Lionsgate, but will be the first for his 34th Street Films production company.
Other Perry projects on the horizon include I Can Do Bad All By Myself which is due out next Friday, (9/11/09), and Why Did I Get Married Too? which has an April 2nd release date.
Looking at the description of the play, it seems like this project will be a good fit for Perry. In fact, if one were to say that this wasn't an adaptation but another one of his scripts, it would only make sense. His previous works have covered such territory and more, and on different entertainment mediums (plays, TV shows, feature films). Even comically advertised works like Madea Goes To Jail took a lot of time to explore the less funnier parts of humanity.
It will be interesting to see how much of himself he will put in the story. Will it seem like another Tyler Perry movie or something possibly beyond that? Will he add characters, try to add some more humor, or could we be dealing with a more serious film?
