'Cosmopolis' starring Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche - trailer review

Cosmopolis Directed by: David Cronenberg Starring: Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti Rating: Not Yet Rated Release Date: TBA, 2012

TRAILER SCORE: 9/10

Thoughts by TSR: Well, this looks insane. And yes, that is absolutely a compliment. All the craziness on display in this trailer for Cosmopolis has raised my excitement level to new heights, quite an achievement considering it was already among my most anticipated films of 2012. I’ve made it clear a handful of times that I’m a big fan of Robert Pattinson, so to have him working with Cronenberg on a project like this excites me to no end.

The trailer’s biggest success is that it’s mostly just a collection of tantalizingly crazy images – rats, and riots, and Robert Pattinson shooting himself in the hand, oh my! – that don’t spell everything out as far as the plot is concerned. We also get brief glimpses of the supporting cast, all of whom look interesting. Paul Giamatti is probably most intriguing, seeing as he’s with Pattinson when he shoots his hand, but Juliette Binoche, Sarah Gadon, and Samantha Morton are up there as well.

This claims to be the “first film about our new millennium,” which is pretty bold, indeed. But Cronenberg is a bold filmmaker and I have faith that he will pull it off. Plus, the way I see it this could be the film that bridges the gap between those who revile The Twilight Saga and those who adore it. The haters get to see Pattinson working with a fantastic filmmaker outside the films they despise, and the Twihards who see this solely for their beloved Edward get treated to a new film from one of the best. Everybody wins.
