'George A. Romero's Survival of the Dead' - trailer review

George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead Directed by: George A. Romero Starring: Alan Van Sprang, Kenneth Welsh, Joris Jarsky Rating: NR Release Date: May 28, 2010

TRAILER SCORE: 6/10

MY THOUGHTS: So, I’m presented with a conundrum when I watch this trailer. I’m a huge zombie fan, even a fan of Romero’s amateur philosophizing. Or, at least I was. Romero’s been around a long time so it’s not surprising that’s he put out a few stinkers, but I have hopes for Survival of the Dead. The problem is, when I watch the trailer, I have post-traumatic stress flashbacks to my last Romero experience with Diary of the Dead. It wasn’t so much that it was scary as it was scarily bad. The way Romero has with tension and conflict is legendary. His ability to integrate these social and cultural ideas into the otherwise mindless (okay, pun intended) zombie genre is remembered by anyone who’s seen that last scene of Night of the Living Dead. The problem is, none of that is present for this trailer or his last effort. I get it, humans can be just as brutal as zombies. Honestly George? That theme stinks like week-old brains. It’s been done before and here it looks like he’s doing it again. Then again, don’t let everything I’ve said up until now fool you, I know I’ll be seeing this one, but it may take some time for me to get around to it. I’m a zombie fan through and through, that hasn’t changed. After all, Romero has always been good with his kills so maybe he’ll throw me a bone with this one. Maybe literally and figuratively?
