Knight and Day (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

Blu-ray Review

Knight and Day

Directed by: James Mangold Cast: Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Peter Sarsgaard Running Time: 1 hr 50 min Rating: PG-13 Due Out: November 30, 2010

PLOT: A rogue secret agent (Cruise) becomes entangled with a car restorer (Diaz) and the two end up on the run together.

WHO'S IT FOR? The film cast's the net wide, it's an action-romantic-comedy so pretty much anyone who likes one of those genres.

MOVIE:

I don't hate Tom Cruise but I've never understood the fascination he holds for other women either.  He's not a bad actor and he picks some good projects but I've never gone to see a film because he was in it.  From the previews, this film looked like a by-the-numbers romantic comedy.  I was wrong about that, at least for the first half of the film.  From almost the beginning, Knight and Day is off and running, with a charming mixture of comedy and compelling action sequences.

The scenes in Boston are great, I was laughing out loud.  But things start to slow down once we get to Europe.  The action scenes still entertain, but once the the real plot kicks in, about a super energy source and a genius scientist (played by Paul Dano who deserves way better), not to mention attempts at plot twists that felt forced, I lost interest.  The ending, which leaves the film open for a sequel, didn't work at all.  It went against all the pre-established characters' traits.

Unfortunately for anyone who wants to know why the film starts out strong before falling apart, don't look for any answers in the extras.  They were all shot during the filming of the movie and play like ads for the film.  Not what I want to see after I already watched the movie.  The weirdest extras are the "viral videos."  They were clearly made by the studio to show that Cruise and Diaz were friends and had fun making the film.  But it looks awkward and staged, they have way less chemistry then they do in the actual film.  If you buy the DVD, you'll be doing it for the movie alone.

MOVIE SCORE: 6/10
