Box Office Preview: 'The Social Network,' 'Case 39,' and 'Let Me In'

Hitting the screens this week… Case 39

Let Me In

The Social Network

TSR's complete Film Review Database

This week offers some heavy hitters, but it’s difficult to say who will emerge victorious after this weekend. Will it be the American remake of the vampire flick Let the Right One In, which is appropriately called Let Me In? Will it be Renee Zellwegger’s long shelved horror flick Case 39? Yeah, I didn’t think so either… but it could easily be David Fincher’s latest on Facebook creator, Mark Zuckerberg.

Maybe it’s just me but I’m placing my bet on Fincher’s latest opus, The Social Network. It’s timely, it’s got a great cast, and more importantly, it’s got a great ad team behind it. Seriously, it’s almost impossible to go anywhere without seeing a TV spot or a bus ad.

Runner up belongs to Let Me In. Sure, all sorts of film snobs (myself included) have declared war on American remakes of perfectly fine foreign films, but does that mean I’m not at least curious? I’m betting most folks who saw the original are, but whether or not they’ll show up for opening weekend is a different story.

Money may never sleep, but I’m guessing Stone, Douglas, and company don’t either. After claiming number one at the box office in its opening weekend, does it have what it takes to claim it again? I doubt it, but that doesn’t mean it won’t try, probably landing in third place this weekend.

Even if Allen wasn’t a fan of Guardians it’s got the IMAX and 3D to remain an earner. It won’t be easy, but when you’re other competition is a Renee Zellweger movie? Yeah, I feel pretty good about these odds.

Finally, if Case 39 makes an appearance in the top five this weekend I’m betting (OK, I’m hoping a little bit too) that it’ll be debuting at number five. After years of waiting for release, not even Bradley Cooper can save this one.

Each week we’ll take a look at the box office and see if we can’t nail the Top 5 films (in correct order).

It’s harder than you think. If you don’t believe, let’s see what your answers are.

My prediction for the weekend of October 1 - 3 …

1. The Social Network

2. Let Me In

3. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

4. Legends of the Guardian: the Owls of Ga’hoole

5. Case 39

So what are your Top 5 at the box office this weekend?
