I honestly don’t see how anyone could vote for Quvenzhane Wallis over Tom Holland. I’ve seen both films and while I understand that Wallis is extremely young and she did well to hold the film together, her work seems much at the hand of the director and, more importantly (if only because I have no definitive proof of my first reason), the role had a really limited range. 90% of the movie is her frowning or running away. There were moments of tenderness and she was lovely, but ultimately the movie carried itself.
Holland, on the other hand, was extraordinary, acting toe-to-toe with one of the best working actresses around right now, and carrying much of the movie’s significant weight on his own shoulders. It’s a shame Wallis has received all the young attention because his work in The Impossible is exemplary and far worthier of an Oscar nomination and a win in their competing category here.
I agree Danny. I think the race should be between Holland and Logan Lerman’s stunning performance in The Perks Of Being A Wallflower.
The Master is the best film since The Social Network. (The winner will be a more “crowd pleasing” film though.)
PT Anderson’s There Will Be Blood deserved every award it got, and then some, but Joaquin Phoenix should be this years Best Actor winner over Daniel Day-Lewis’ Lincoln.(He’s already got 2! Phoenix could have won for Gladiator, Walk The Line, and/or I’m Still Here. But he has none. By not voting for Phoenix, you are proving his point that ‘Awards are BS’.)
