Thoughts by TSR: Ben Affleck has made quite a transition from laughing stock to acclaimed filmmaker in the last few years. I love both of his directorial efforts, Gone Baby Gone and The Town, and he’s proved more than capable in front of the camera as well. He was very strong in The Town, and I believe his performance in 2006’s Hollywoodland was worthy of an Oscar nomination. All that considered, I’m interested in anything Affleck plans to do from here on out.
Now Affleck is in talks to join Line of Sight as star, director and producer. According to THR, the film deals with “an elite commando squad transporting cargo while dealing with a global threat.” That sounds fine, if a little generic, until this next bit of information. The film will be done in a first-person perspective, similar to that of a first-person shooter video game. The first-person shooter idea is potentially gimmicky (remember Doom?), so that gives me minor cause for concern. I’m not sure an entire film in that style will work without growing tiresome, but if Affleck does sign on to direct there will be reason for optimism.
Affleck just began shooting the Iran hostage thriller Argo, so if he adds this to his docket it will have to wait until production on that film is complete. I’m not sold on the first-person perspective aspect, but if the script – conceived by Alex Heineman and recently worked on by Halo: Reach writer Peter O’Brien – is well done I have faith Ben Affleck can do something interesting with the project.
