A whole shipload of tidbits about upcoming blockbusters have been dished out at Comic-Con, but here's some news that seems to have gone under the geek radar. According to Disney's Head of Production Oren Aviv, a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean is going to start shooting in "April or May of next year," he said to Coming Soon.
"We are going to release it hopefully in 2011, is the plan," he stated. Unlike the previous two films, just one movie will be shot at a time, which would "hopefully be the first of another trilogy."
Admitting the monstrous size the trilogy has obtained, Aviv said "It's important to get the story right and it's important to me to scale it down, because we can't get bigger."
If the series has already reached max-capacity, as Aviv has stated, what direction does it have left to sail in? "The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters."
Having said that, Aviv agreed with Coming Soon that there is a lot of backstory to Captain Jack Sparrow that has yet to be explored. At the same time, he also would not confirm whether we would see such background in the fourth movie.
Pirates of the Carribbean trilogy director Gore Verbinski is currently resigned from the series, opting to work on a possible "Bioshock" movie instead. But it sounds like Aviv, Disney, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer are cruising along till that expected start date. Sounds like the summer of 2011 might be another summer dominated by Pirates.
Wait a second, did Oren Aviv just say the word "reboot"? To be fair, he also added "kind of" to the powerful R-word, but his usage is worth questioning enough. Could he mean he just wants to focus more on his beloved characters a bit more? Considering the power that Johnny Depp has on the series, it's not likely they'll do anything like a younger version of Jack Sparrow or "Pirates of the Carribbean Babies." But still, even if the key players do return, do you think its possible they could start all over? Or perhaps continue on to a whole new type of world, but with the same character? Either way, Pirates of the Carribbean: At World's End hauled in a treasure chest of $960,996,492, which is both a lot for Disney to re-dream about and also a lot to live up to.
