'That's My Boy' starring Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg - red band trailer review

That's My Boy Directed by: Sean Anders, John Morris Starring: Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Leighton Meester Rating: Not Yet Rated Release Date: June 15, 2012

TRAILER SCORE: 2/10

Thoughts by TSR: Adam Sandler hates us. It’s the only explanation for why he keeps making these pitiful “comedies.” I long for him to do something interesting like Punch-Drunk Love again, but he seems perfectly happy producing trash that rakes in hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office. I thought returning to R-rated fare might be a step in the right direction, but That’s My Boy looks just as atrocious as the rest.

This isn’t comedy. It’s nothing more than Sandler putting on another goofy voice and being filthy for the sake of being filthy. There’s nothing funny about Sandler smoking a bong with Vanilla Ice. Maybe it’ll end up funny in the final product, but right now it just feels like the writers tried to come up with the wackiest scenario they could. And there’s certainly nothing funny about Leighton Meester finding various, ahem, bodily fluids on her wedding dress. A gross-out comedy is fine, but if it’s just raunchy it doesn’t work.

Sandler dominates this trailer, but his idiot brigade is once again along for the ride (and so is, for some reason, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan). I hate this trailer, and that’s disappointing because the film is written by three funny guys (David Caspe, David Wain, and Ken Marino). I’d like to be optimistic, but if there are no laughs in a red band trailer then there isn’t much hope. This will be arriving in theaters just in time for Father’s Day. Unless the message you want to give your dear old dad is that you hate him, I’d steer clear of That’s My Boy.
