'The Smurfs' starring Neil Patrick Harris - trailer review

The Smurfs Directed by: Raja Gosnell Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara Rating: NR Release Date: August 3, 2011

MY THOUGHTS: The man who brought us Scooby Doo has once again returned to sully the favorites of my childhood. As if we didn't suffer enough through two Scooby Doo movies, this time Gasnell is back with The Smurfs and lemme tell ya, this looks... less than Smurf-tacular? See what I did there? Substituting Smurf where most people say "spec"? Well, if you thought that was painful (even I did) then prepare for the most excruciating minute and 47 seconds of your life. That's all they do in this trailer. Smurf this and smurf that. Believe me, I've heard the many theories about The Smurfs and their ability to use "smurf" as any part of speech, but that's just lazy writing. I can't be the only one that sees that, right? Furthermore, the plot of this movie, if it's even fair to call it a plot, goes a little something like this... Enchanted with itty bitty blue people. Does that sound like a good time to you? Because I'm willing to admit that this might be some people's idea of a good time. I just don't happen to be one of those people. In the end, I just felt dirty when the trailer came to a close. The Smurfs of my youth had been violated by CGI and poor voice acting, but they're the lucky ones. Katy Perry as Smurfette can at least hide behind the fact that she doesn't make a physical appearance in the movie. NPH and Emma from Glee weren't so lucky. No matter how you slice it, The Smurfs looks like a big pile of... for decency's sake, I'll just say it looks like a pile of smurf and leave it at that.
