'Sucker Punch' starring Emily Browning - feature trailer review

Sucker Punch Directed by: Zack Snyder Starring: Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish Rating: TBD Release Date: March 25, 2011

TRAILER SCORE: 7/10

MY THOUGHTS: Holy crapoli -- am I stoked or am I stoked or am I stoked? The answer? S-T-O-K-E-D.

It's a great time to be a fifteen-year-old boy, isn't it? It's a shame I'm twenty years past my prime. This trailer would have been 100% pure Pavlovian arousal for me back then. As it stands presently (though I am very excited about Sucker Punch, as we've clearly established), being an adult who's been around the creative block a few times, I've gotta say that this trailer, albeit visually awesome, is at least a little bit guilty of falling into the "more is less" pit. It's just very loud visually; I felt my senses shutting down a bit near the end.

I suppose I feel that way about a lot of trailers these days (I've become more and more of a fan of the simple teaser), I feel like proprietary rights are being squandered -- whatever happened to keeping an ace in the hole? I hope director Zack Snyder has a few up his sleeve, 'cause as this trailer is stunning, it's also overkill, and I fear it leaves little left for the 'day of' experience. If the story/script is stellar, then there's nothing to fear, but I'm not particularly confident that this will be a film remembered for its writing. 300 blew me away on all fronts, but Watchmen pissed me off to no end, so Sucker Punch, in my own institutionalized fantasyland, represents Snyder's chance at narrative redemption. I'm pulling for him, and for fanboys everywhere. I want this to be as good as I think it could be, and I hope the "you...will be...unprepared" rings true.
