'I'm Still Here' starring Joaquin Phoenix - trailer review

I'm Still Here Directed by: Casey Affleck Starring: Joaquin Phoenix Rating: NR Release Date: September 10, 2010

TRAILER SCORE: 8/10

MY THOUGHTS: I can't remember the last time a doc had a teaser trailer, but this one for I'm Still Here is probably one of the most compelling trailers I've seen in a while. Maybe it's because it's anchored in reality and the American obsession with celebrity? Maybe it's because it's about as intimate as you can get, watching someone self-destruct? It could be a number of things, but what's certain is Joaquin Phoenix is a Titanic-sized PR disaster. I'd like to see just how in-depth the film goes into Phoenix's state of mind and/or thought process, but considering the director (Casey Affleck), it's hard to imagine he'll be too critical. There's a strong possibility that this movie will all be a long sob story or probably even a hoax, but I'm still interested to find out. If it turns out to be a hoax, I'll be even more interested to see how Joaquin Phoenix's career turns out after all of this bad publicity. Either way, I'm not terribly proud to say it, especially because the voiceover sounds so new-age and pretentious, but this pretty much sold me on going to see I'm Still Here in theaters.
