The Back-Up Plan Directed by: Alan Poul Starring: Jennifer Lopez, Alex O’Loughlin, Eric Christian Olsen Rating: NR Release Date: April 23, 2010
TRAILER SCORE: 6/10
MY THOUGHTS: The Superbowl spot gave us a little idea of what to expect, but after a full theatrical trailer, things still aren’t looking up. Jennifer Lopez leads this comedy that seems to be Baby Mama if Tina Fey could get pregnant. Sounds like it would make a whole different movie? Sure it would, but when dealing with the same humdrum romanticism mixed in with a little gross-out humor thrown in for the guys, you get roughly the same results. If Jennifer Lopez’s clips from the trailer are any indication of the movie, it’ll probably fall flat on its face. However, the contribution of such standard romantic comedy supporting cast members like Melissa McCarthy (Sookie from “Gilmore Girls”) and you have potential for at least some charming moments. However, it looks like most of the draw for this film will be man candy in the form of Alex O’Loughlin. When they make sure to showcase the male lead’s six pack “talent” in the trailer, you know they’re pretty desperate for a draw. However, that may be just enough to save this by-the-numbers romantic disaster.
