Another off weekend for Hollywood, IMO. The Lion King will likely continue to do well, but we've got four new-comers that think they're up to the challenge.
First up is 50/50, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen. This film looks like it just might hit on all comedy/drama cylinders -- to be both a quality drama, and a hilarious comedy is quite a feat, and that's what 50/50 is shooting for. I feel that most filmmakers whom attempt such, fail. Gordon-Levitt is pretty darn solid though, and he should provide the film with enough dramatic punch so as to exist as an acceptable teeter-totter comedy/drama. Seth Rogen has overstayed his welcome. Am I the only one tired of his voice and staid delivery of lines? He really just plays himself in everything he does, and a little bit of Rogen goes a long way, doesn't it? I’m not overly excited about 50/50, but it definitely gets my vote for winner at the box office this weekend.
Courageous stars a bunch of people I've never heard of, is written by someone I've never heard of, and is directed by someone I've never heard of -- is this a distribution coup or what? Maybe I'm just out of the loop here. I must confess, I'm confused a bit by this film's wide-release presence. Either way, I don't think this particular film about a group of police officers struggling with their faith and their wives is going to move mountains at the box office. Might be a good film, sure, but my bet is that it's gonna get walloped this weekend.
Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz star in Dream House. Big name actors? Check. It's directed by Jim Sheridan. Big name director? Check. It's written by David Loucka. Big name writer? Never heard of him. On paper this film has a lot going for it, but I'm skeptical that audiences are going to put up with Craig for much longer, he just falls so short as a leading man. Watts and Weisz typically put in for good scripts, and Jim Sheridan boasts some phenomenal films on his resume (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father, The Boxer, In America). Yeah, I'm as shocked as you are, and yes, I do believe this will be one where they'll say in hindsight, "What was Sheridan thinking? Why sign on to such a project?" I predict a box office flop.
What's Your Number? Who cares what your number is -- it's gonna be a really low number, that's what. Anna Faris and Chris Evans in the same film together, yaaaaaawn.
