Surprising no one, Transformers: Dark of the Moon dominated the holiday weekend box office. DOTM's official estimate for its opening weekend (July 1 - 3) was $97.5 million. With the 4th of July falling on Monday, the holiday's timing helped to win DOTM a lot of additional attention -- as if it needed it. DOTM is estimated to have brought in another $19 million on the 4th of July, bringing it's estimated grand total up to $181 million (averaging just under $30 million/day for it's first 6 full days of release) and gaining it the 'Independence Day Gross Record' (dethroning Spider Man 2). I was personally quite happy to see it perform so well, as my royalty checks will be that much larger now. Just kidding, but I was in the film -- you can read about my experiences as a TF3 extra here: My Day as an Extra on Transformers: DOTM
Rolling in at 2nd place this weekend, Cars 2 earned another $26 million, and Bad Teacher found itself in at 3rd with another $15 million.
Heavy hitters Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts had a bad/bad weekend at the B.O. with Larry Crowne bringing in a mere $13 million at 2,973 theaters (that's less than $5k per theater -- yowch!).
Super 8 stuck around with a fairly respectable 4th-weekend $8 million, and ensured that newcomer Monte Carlo had no Top 5 honors.
Calhoun Kersten vs. Aaron Ruffcorn
Each weekend Kersten and Ruffcorn go head to head in the Box Office Challenge, trying to pick the correct Number One film in America and how much money it will make. This weekend ... Kersten Wins! Season record: Kersten 6 - Ruffcorn 5 Thoughts by TSR: In winning a close one, Kersten continues to keep Ruffcorn on his toes...
This weekend, Transformers: Dark of the Moon earned roughly $98 million -- Kersten had predicted it would do $80 million, Ruffcorn guessed $125 million.
Ruffcorn's overshot cost him dearly this time. Kersten wins!
