Pixar's Cars 2 had a big weekend, and coasted across the finish line well in front of any competition. In its opening weekend back in June of 2006, the original Cars brought in a comparable $60 million. Unfortunately this probably means that Cars 3 is already in the works. I suppose the Box Office Review department should be devoid of opinions, but I apologize, I just can't hold back here. Cars is such a horrible premise. At what age do we stop attributing human characteristics to inanimate objects? Four? Five? I'm very surprised that these films exist, and even more surprised that these films do well at the box office. I'm a pretty big fan of Pixar, but with this particular franchise -- ugh.
Moving on...
Coming in at second place this weekend, with $31 million, was Bad Teacher, Cameron Diaz's swan song (as a sex symbol anyway). The film wasn't reviewed too well, but apparently there are enough guys (and gals) out there who will still fork over their hard-earned cash to see an aging Diaz wash a car and spout apathetic Apatowian zingers with reckless abandon.
Moving on...
Green Lantern generated another 18 million greenbacks, landing it squarely in third, where Super 8, in its third weekend, brought in another $12 million. The fifth place filmic fiasco Mr. Popper's Penguins somehow sucked another $10 million from the pocketbooks of the populace, and my eyebrow is raised once again.
Calhoun Kersten vs. Aaron Ruffcorn
Each weekend Kersten and Ruffcorn go head to head in the Box Office Challenge, trying to pick the correct Number One film in America and how much money it will make.
This weekend ... Ruffcorn Wins!
Season record: Kersten 5 - Ruffcorn 5
Thoughts by TSR: Ruffcorn ties it up (again!)
