Hitting the screens this week… Cats and Dogs: the Revenge of Kitty Galore (no coverage, and we're not sorry about it)
Charlie St. Cloud complete St. Cloud coverage
Dinner for Schmucks complete Schmucks coverage
I think it’s safe to say that this is one of our biggest new release weekends this summer. It’s definitely a lackluster year for movies and between you and me, I doubt this movie will do much to change it, but if you’ve got kids, you just might be in luck. There’s something for kids to teens with these new releases. Cats and Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore for the little ones, Charlie St. Cloud for the Efron-loving tweens, and Dinner for Schmucks for the rest.
Still, Inception is the one to beat this weekend and with the rather mediocre offerings of this weekend, I’m not too sure this will be its losing weekend.
Playing strictly by the numbers game, Cats and Dogs may just have what it takes to take second place. It has by far the most theaters of any of this weekend’s movies, plus with the 3D gimmick and having to bring both the kids and the parents in, it may just be able to do it.
Paul Rudd and Steve Carell’s appeal may do some good this weekend. The studio doesn’t seem to have too much faith in it because it’s got the least number of theaters, but the combined star power of the two just might put this one over the top.
Unfortunately, Efron doesn’t have a great track record with dramas of the non-musical variety. Plus, Charlie St. Cloud’s PG-13 rating may not be able to cash in on his fan base, in hopes of drawing in a new crowd. Will it work? Who knows, but I don’t have a very good feeling about it.
Finally, Salt which had a decent opening weekend, may feel the sting with all these new releases. Jolie’s spy-thriller seems to be in a losing position with all of the new flicks bombarding this barely memorable one.
Each week we’ll take a look at the box office and see if we can’t nail the Top 5 films (in correct order).
It’s harder than you think. If you don’t believe, let’s see what your answers are.
My prediction for the weekend of July 30– August 1 …
1. Inception complete Inception coverage
2. Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore
3. Dinner for Schmucks complete Schmucks coverage
4. Charlie St. Cloud complete St. Cloud coverage
5. Salt complete Salt coverage
So what are your Top 5 at the box office this weekend?
