TSR Buzz: Your ‘Social Network’ Homework thanks to Reznor, Fincher and Zuckerberg
It's time to Zuck up, internet. A new day is nearly upon us. This Friday, the monstrous entity of Facebook will conquer another large part of the world when a film by Fight Club director David Fincher called The Social Network starts to inform mainstream audiences about the possible origins of the site and its creator(s). Our reviews of The Social Network will be up this weekend, but for now TSR can only try to prepare you for what your trip to the multiplex this weekend has in store. With TSR Buzz, you’ll find links to articles, videos and other random things that will help you waste your time just a little bit more.
- First, it's time to get all jokes about "The Owl Movie" out of your system. You might have been too busy hitting up Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps to check out The Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole last weekend. Either way, the time for puns at Zack Snyder's film's expense has totally passed, and so has the sarcastic nature of even calling it "The Owl Movie." Let this "Funny or Die" skit stand as the last stand of Owls of Ga'Hoole jokes.
- Second, prepare yourself visually for what you're in for with The Social Network. Check out this clip, one that occurs maybe twenty minutes into the film. And spoiler alert: yes, this "Facebook" thing does actually come to fruition.
- Now, let's prep your ears. Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails) and Atticus Ross have released a free five-song sampler of tracks that are going to be in the film's score. Today and tomorrow, the full soundtrack can be bought digitally at Amazon.com for $2.99. Your assignment at the very least is to listen to these two tracks. Imagine them accompanying fast-paced scenes of keyboard typing, algorithm drawing, and conversations about making millions of dollars. You're starting to get the full picture of The Social Network.

- Here's your most daunting task, and one that can even wait until after you see the film. Click here to read Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg's own side of the story. The New Yorker has gained access to Zuckerberg's life, and also some of his own chat transcripts from the days when "thefacebook" was just an idea. (Yes, the phrase "dumb f**ks" is used.) Bragging to co-workers and friends that you read "something in the New Yorker" is entirely optional.
- Finally - soon, I will be posting a write-up that compares Fincher's film to the book of which it is based, Ben Mezrich's "The Accidental Billionaires." I assume this will be online sometime around Friday. So after you see The Social Network this weekend, look for my write-up, which will be pointing out some differences between the two mediums, big and small.
And of course, if you haven't already, support The Scorecard Review (and Mark Zuckerberg, I guess) by "Liking" our Facebook page.
