Thoughts by TSR: Compared to the international trailer for Rush, this one hits a bit more heavily on the glamour of racing, particularly by showing off the cockiness of Chris Hemsworth’s James Hunt. I was a fan of the way the earlier trailer highlighted the risks the drivers take every time they step into the car. There is still some of that – we once again see the great moment where Hunt says he feels responsible for Niki Lauda’s (Daniel Brühl) horrific crash and Lauda replies that Hunt is just as responsible for his getting back in the car – but I really like the slightly different focus this trailer takes.
The opening minute or so is chock full of Hemsworth being completely magnetic and charming. One can’t blame Nurse Natalie Dormer for falling for his charms. He might be a tad on the cocky side, but he’s certainly a step up from King Joffrey. Brühl takes a bit of a backseat this time, though he still looks strong. They are two performances I’m definitely looking forward to this fall. I also remain impressed by the look of the film. Even though Ron Howard generally isn’t a director I get particularly excited about, there is a real style to the racing sequences. The race in the rain – which includes another great moment where the drivers all raise their hands in agreement to race – remains a standout. Things start on a high note thanks to Hemsworth and they end just as good thanks to the visuals and the use of Flux Pavilion’s “I Can’t Stop.” Another very strong trailer for a film that looks like it could be one of the better fall offerings.
