'The Internship' starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson - trailer review
The Internship Directed by: Shawn Levy Starring: Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Rose Byrne Rating: Not Yet Rated Release Date: June 7, 2013
Trailer Score: 2/10
Thoughts by TSR: Shawn Levy looks to be following up 2011's Real Steel with another science fiction film (this one sponsored by Google, apparently). Judging from this trailer, I'd say The Internship features Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson playing aliens sent to earth from their low-tech home planet. Once they arrive, they take over the bodies of two fortysomething men and do their best to blend in – quite the challenge considering they know next to nothing about earth's technology and recent pop culture! Watch as they make cutting edge references to The Terminator franchise and Flashdance, have no idea who Professor X is, and do their best to figure out this crazy internet thingamajig! What's that you say? You mean they aren't supposed to be aliens with no concept of how human technology works? Yikes.
Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn were enjoyable together in Wedding Crashers, but boy does this whole thing feel stale. I mean, topics it goes to for humor are fist bumping and webcams. It's almost impressive how hard the jokes flop. There are two things I like in this trailer, though neither lasts long enough to make it better. The first is the use of "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (featuring Wanz). That song is funnier than anything in these two and a half minutes. It's also thematically appropriate. Macklemore raps about "grandpa's style," and this film's two main characters are no more adept at using a computer than my grandparents. We also see the lovely Rose Byrne wearing glasses. There's nothing more to add seeing as she's literally on screen for one second, but I guess every positive counts when something is this dire.
