Thoughts by TSR: I never got around to seeing 2010’s RED. After I remembered the film existed, I still didn’t remember how successful it was (almost $200 million worldwide). Word of a sequel didn’t do anything to get me excited, but this trailer actually has me mildly interested. Does it look great? No, I wouldn’t say that. It does look awfully enjoyable, though, and that could be enough to make me give it a chance someday down the line.
RED 2 appears to be an action-comedy where the comedy will work much better for me than the action. I know a car drives under a semi and a different vehicle gets blown up by John Malkovich’s pocket dynamite, but none of it stands out. The comedic moments, however, had me chuckling. While I enjoyed the opening with Bruce Willis and Malkovich in the hardware store, it was Mary-Louise Parker’s entrance that made me laugh. Then at the end the exchange about the human being in the trunk was fun. Helen Mirren casually talking about killing Willis while pouring acid on a corpse was amusing as well, though the “Breaking Bad” fan in me is worried that it’s going to eat a hole in the bottom of that bathtub. I’ll leave that question to smarter scientists than myself. I’ll just say that, much to my surprise, I think this trailer convinced me to give RED 2 a shot.
