Trailer Score: 6/10

Thoughts by TSR: I’m afraid Filter’s horrendous cover of “Happy Together” would be enough to sully any trailer. I have no idea who thought that would be a good piece of trailer music, let alone a good idea to record in the first place. Anyway, there’s more here to consider than just the band responsible for that one song about taking a picture. And on the whole it's much less successful than the earlier glimpse (back from a time when The Great Gatsby was supposed to hit theaters on Christmas Day).

Plenty of it still looks fantastic – the massive party sequence remains awe-inspiring and perfectly suited for some immersive 3D – but I’m less sure about the two leading men. Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire simply didn't do it for me this time. DiCaprio in particular is mostly disappointing, what with his questionable accent (appropriately so, perhaps?) and typical brow-furrowing. At one point I wouldn’t have been surprised if Carey Mulligan (or Ben Kingsley) asked “Why you all wet, baby?” He does, however, look good in the period clothes, and gets to do another Django Unchained-esque scream, so I’ll remain hopeful. If nothing else, we’ll have plenty of beauty to admire, from the cast to the production design, cinematography, and costumes. I certainly want there to be more, but right now that will have to serve as the green light that gives me hope.
