'Carrie' starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore - teaser trailer review

Carrie Directed by: Kimberly Peirce Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer Rating: Not Yet Rated Release Date: March 15, 2013

TRAILER SCORE: 5/10

Thoughts by TSR: Horror remakes are a fact of life, so I try to go into each one of them with something of an open mind. Sometimes that’s a bit more difficult. Take this new Carrie, for example. While some people involved give me a bit of optimism – I'm a fan of director Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don't Cry), Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, and Chloë Moretz (more on her in a minute though) – this teaser doesn’t do much to get me excited.

The tracking shot through the city is sort of cool, if artificial, and I like the scale they’re going for. My favorite thing about this is the voiceovers talking about Carrie. They do a decent job ramping up tension as we fly over the carnage. Unfortunately, the zoom in on Moretz’s face lands with a thud. I usually like Moretz – she does good work in Kick-Ass and Let Me In – but she’s not unnerving in this moment at all. It just made me go, “Yep. That’s Chloë Moretz covered in fake blood.” This is really nothing more than an announcement teaser, so it’s entirely possible that she’ll prove to give a great performance worthy of Sissy Spacek. I just wanted a stronger first impression. Hopefully the first full-length trailer will better show what this updated Carrie has to offer (ideally plenty of Julianne Moore), but for now I’m remaining less than enthused.
