Thoughts by TSR: Despite being from the Midwest, I had no idea butter carving was an actual thing that existed. Even if I had, I never would have considered the possibility that it could make for a fun film. And yet, here we have a trailer that makes Butter look like just that. Crazy times we’re living in.
Even if it didn’t focus on something as different as the cutthroat world of butter carving, I’d probably watch any film that features this cast. Jennifer Garner is an actress I’ve really warmed up to since Juno, and she’s doing fine work here. Her on-screen husband, Ty Burrell, has become the only part of “Modern Family” I can stand, so his involvement is also a plus. The always watchable Hugh Jackman pops up as well, but none of them are the standouts. That title is reserved for Rob Corddry and Olivia Wilde. These two make up most of the best moments, from Wilde’s take on “The Scarlett Letter” to Corddry sending the trailer out on a high note (“Really? The butter police?”).
I might agree with his character when he says, “It’s butter! You put it on toast!” but some of the sculptures are rather impressive. More impressive is that this film looks fun and entertaining. Plus, it features Kristen Schaal (here’s where I heartily recommend both “Bob’s Burgers” and “Gravity Falls”). Couldn’t ask for much more than that.
