Thoughts by TSR: When I wrote about the first trailer for Cosmopolis, I affectionately said that I didn’t know what to make of it. It’s a bit easier to put the images in this second trailer into context, in part because this one is slightly more straightforward, but also because I’ve since read Don DeLillo’s novel of the same name. DeLillo’s sharp writing kept things moving throughout those 209 pages, but a story that often keeps its main character confined to the back of a limo could have a tough time transitioning from page to screen without being a bore. Fortunately, the film features a fantastic cast that is working under the direction of David Cronenberg. Those two things, combined with this less enigmatic, yet still crazy trailer, keep Cosmopolis firmly near the top of my most anticipated list.
The slew of terrific actors in the supporting roles is a huge plus – Paul Giamatti in particular has a potentially great role – but Robert Pattinson is the star and I love what he’s doing here. His detached smirk after watching a man get stabbed on TV is perfect and the crazy look on his face as he walks down the alley shaking the gun is one of my favorite bizarre moments in the trailer (though it is certainly rivaled by the giant rat and everything about Jay Baruchel’s performance).
I liked A Dangerous Method quite a bit, but I’m thrilled to see Cronenberg getting really weird again. Having Pattinson and the tremendous supporting cast along for the ride only makes it more exciting.
