Men in Black III Directed by: Barry Sonnenfeld Starring: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin Rating: PG-13 Release Date: May 25, 2012
TRAILER SCORE: 5/10
Thoughts by TSR: There is a very good chance I’m going to eventually see Men in Black III, and it has little to do with the quality of this trailer as a whole. In fact, I’d say it’s mostly unappealing. But no matter how hard I fight it, I can’t deny that Josh Brolin doing his best Tommy Lee Jones impression and Bill Hader as MiB agent Andy Warhol are going to be too much for me to stay away.
We don’t see a whole lot more of Brolin than we did in the shorter trailer from a few months back, but he still totally nails the look and speech patterns of Agent K. As for Hader as Andy Warhol, well, that’s simply brilliant. Hader is hilarious no matter the circumstances (and I look forward to him finally getting a starring vehicle of his own someday), but for now it’s nice to have him doing strong work in smaller parts like this.
Beyond that, unfortunately, there isn’t much to be positive about. It’s not that it looks terrible, it’s just everything is stale. Nothing feels any different than anything that came in the first two films. I do like the general concept of Agent J having to literally jump through time, but that’s overshadowed by the lame joke of the guy saying “First, we gotta get high. No, I mean really high.” The same goes for the film’s look and effects. They certainly aren’t awful, but did we really need anyone to spend hundreds of millions of dollars treading this ground again? I may plan to see it sometime down the line, but for me the answer is still a resounding “No.”
