'Casa de mi Padre' starring Will Ferrell - theatrical trailer review
Casa de mi Padre Directed by: Matt Piedmont Starring: Will Ferrell, Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna Rating: R Release Date: March 16, 2012
TRAILER SCORE: 6/10
Thoughts by TSR: More of an announcement teaser than anything, this brief look at Casa de mi Padre doesn’t bother getting into much plot, instead attempting to answer the question, “Who is… Armando Alvarez?” And that’s a question the teaser does a pretty good job of answering. He’s a rancher, a son, a lover, a vigilante. He is… Will Ferrell speaking Spanish.
I heard about this film over a year ago, but at the time wasn't sure what to think. The novelty of Will Ferrell doing a film in Spanish was both what drew me to it, and what most concerned me. On the one hand, it looks ridiculous and Armando Alvarez seems like a character Will Ferrell will commit to and nail. What worries me is that the joke of Ferrell speaking Spanish could wear off quickly, making the film come off as one note.
Amidst showing us who Armando Alvarez is, we get brief looks at supporting players Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, the latter in particular looking like he’s having fun firing off his guns. The costume department also deserves recognition for providing Will Ferrell with some great attire (though I kind of hope that white suit he’s sporting at the beginning and end is something out of Ferrell’s own closet).
The film is certainly going to be a tough sell, so hopefully the next trailer plays up the comedic lunacy that could give a clearer picture of just what Casa de mi Padre has to offer.
