'Wrath of the Titans' starring Sam Worthington and Liam Neeson - trailer review

Wrath of the Titans Directed by: Jonathan Liebesman Starring: Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes Rating: Not Yet Rated Release Date: May 30, 2012

TRAILER SCORE: 6/10

Thoughts by TSR: Boy, the marketing people for these films are really outdoing themselves. I’ll never figure out how they came up with something as imaginative as “Titans Will Clash” as the tagline for Clash of the Titans, and now they’ve went above and beyond with “Feel The Wrath.”

Okay, maybe I’m being hard on them. And yes, I realize that is a relatively minor thing to be picking on. To be perfectly honest, other than a terrible version of “Sweet Dreams” and a general music video-esque feel to how the trailer is put together, I think what’s here is decent. Granted, I didn’t hate the trailer for Clash of the Titans either, but a tolerable trailer is as good a place as any to begin.

Immediately it’s clear there seem to be a handful of improvements. For one thing, Worthington is sporting a hairdo that isn’t egregiously anachronistic. It looks kind of silly on him, sure, but at least it’s more appropriate. Rosamund Pike has replaced Alexa Davalos as Andromeda, which I’ll happily chalk up in the improvement column (even if she’ll likely be forced to simply stand around and watch). Some of the CGI monsters on display look interesting, the fighting is solid, and there are a handful of impressive shots. It’s also nice that there will actually be some serious action with the Titans this time around. Yes, that was just explored a couple of months ago with Immortals, but it’s another step in the right direction for this film. Finally, I’m grateful there isn’t a line like, “Release the Kraken!” for people to overuse for the next year. Small victories.

Am I confident that this will be a good film? Absolutely not. But maybe, just maybe, Wrath of the Titans will manage to be a marked improvement over its predecessor. Oh… it’s being post-converted to 3D again? Uh oh…
