Thoughts by TSR: Yawn. That’s about as much excitement as I’m able to muster up for this latest film starring Amanda Seyfried. It’s not that Gone looks outrageously bad, but there is a definite feeling of been there, done that. Even that wouldn’t be an immediate deal breaker if there was someone in the cast or crew who I felt could elevate the material. Alas, there is not. Instead we are left with the same type of generic looking thriller that typically hits theaters in the early months of the year.
There must be people out there who really like Amanda Seyfried, but I’ve never much cared for her (Mean Girls excluded). This doesn’t seem like it will be any exception, though it’s hard to be too harsh on her when she’s saddled with lines such as, “I’ll sleep when he’s dead.” By now it’s tough for me to take a line like that seriously, so I suppose Seyfried gets credit for managing to deliver it with a straight face.
My biggest issue is the tag at the end. I hope the voice on the phone doesn’t give away the killer’s identity (if the killer exists at all, of course). I could be wrong, but that voice sounds familiar. Hopefully things aren’t as they appear during those last few moments – which is very possible in this type of film – or else this will simply be another case of marketing giving away too much.
Even though it comes out at a relative downtime at the movies, I imagine there will be more worthwhile options available. Gone looks about as memorable as its title, and even though we’re still over two months away from its release, I’m already starting to forget it exists.
