'Melancholia' starring Kirsten Dunst - trailer review
Melancholia Directed by: Lars Von Trier Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland Rating: Not Yet Rated Release Date: November 11, 2011
TRAILER SCORE: 7/10
Thoughts by TSR: A little bit "wow, this is amazing" and a little bit "wow, this is pretentious." Sound and image wise this is a brilliant trailer. It reminded me of The Fountain, and The Tree of Life in its presentation and general feel. It did a great job at building an air of foreboding mystery, and I found myself genuinely interested in the physics behind the nuance of this impending 'end of the world.' It's cool to see Kirsten Dunst back in action, she's been pretty quiet lately. I've never been a huge fan of hers, but she looks to fit well with Melancholia. The rest of the cast looks real solid too. Close as I can figure it, this is director Lars Von Trier's fifteenth feature length film, and this trailer does an excellent job at showcasing his talents. I dug the music here, and the cinematography and art design look phenomenal, though there were a few shots that looked a bit heavy handed -- especially the paused shot on the golf course, which I found to be unintelligible/weird to the point of "huh?" Perhaps that was the point though. The film is certainly advertised here as depressing and introspective, which makes sense considering the story, and of course, the title. I hadn't heard much about Melancholia, but after seeing the trailer, I'm definitely interested.
