'Bellflower' starring Evan Glodell and Tyler Dawson - trailer review

Bellflower Directed by: Evan Glodell Starring: Evan Glodell, Tyler Dawson, Jessie Wiseman Rating: R Release Date: August 5, 2011

TRAILER SCORE: 8/10

Thoughts by TSR: The trailer Bellflower is the closest to art cinema I've seen in recent years. It's completely spellbinding. Although the acting comes off as a little flat when the lines are delivered, Bellflower plays to its strengths with this trailer by giving us plenty of visual elements and plenty of visceral material.

If you really think about it, the story of a guy losing it over the woman he loves is nothing too original. We see it in our TV, we hear it in our music, and we even see it in the lives of those around us. In that sense, Bellflower leaves something to be desired, but it quickly becomes clear that this movie isn't about the story. It seems like it's more about how the story is being told. With the stunning imagery and the powerful use of the soundtrack, Bellflower weaves a compelling story out of some lackluster material.

Perhaps Bellfower's greatest asset is its awareness of its own endgame. Even the critics openly refer to the shocking and climactic finale that almost seems inevitable from the trailer's opening, but there's more to it than that. Bellflower forces us to watch, even in this trailer, as its protagonists spin wildly out of control and we, in the audience, are completely powerless to stop it. Much like a trainwreck, it even becomes hard to look way. Bellflower is in every sense of the phrase, shaping up to become the beautiful disaster of 2011.
