'Dylan Dog: Dead of Night' starring Brandon Routh - trailer review
Dylan Dog: Dead of Night Directed by: Kevin Munroe Starring: Brandon Routh, taye Diggs, Sam Huntington Rating: PG-13 Release Date: April 29, 2011
TRAILER SCORE: 8/10
MY THOUGHTS: Now this one is for the more obscure comic book fans. Sure, I can get behind stuff like Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger but every so often, it's nice to see Hollywood approach a new character. Judging from the trailer, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night will be a nice change of pace. I'm a huge fan of the comic so I'm eager to see how they handle the translation (both from comic to movie and Dylan Dog's translation from its original Italian to English) but I feel pretty confident after this trailer. It's got a solid lead-in and some amazing visuals that it shows off, but I hope that these things don't bury the story. Towards the end of the trailer, they sort of give up on piecing any real story together and just revel in their own special effects. Sure, it's a little obnoxious and self-congratulatory, but I understand why they did it and why they pretty much had to do it. Still, a little subtlety might have been nice. With a trailer like this, there's an immediate desire to foolishly compare Dylan Dog to Constantine but, rest assured, there is a difference too significant for this self-proclaimed fanboy to get into. But then again, maybe the comparison will work. How they get people in the theaters doesn't really matter much as getting people to see it at all. The very mention of Dylan Dog got me hooked, but it's not as easy for other viewers. They had to sell the location, the characters, and the superstition. While it may not be a perfect trailer, they did a great job selling Dylan Dog. Now let's just hope that the movie is even half as good as the trailer.
