'Hall Pass' starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis - red band trailer review

Hall Pass Directed by: Bobby Farrelly Starring: Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate Rating: R Release Date: February 25, 2011

TRAILER SCORE: 4/10

MY THOUGHTS: Let me start by saying, few movies that have had rough trailers in the first place have been improved by the offer of a "red band trailer." Most "normal" trailers are cut in a way that the swearing is implied so the supposed humor is still intact. While I will admit there are a couple of immature chuckles here and there (nothing wrong with those), the trailer itself is a mess.

Remember the loosely strung together plot of Hall Pass in the first place? I certainly hope you do because it makes a brief appearance about halfway through the trailer, but mostly the trailer is a compilation of the most crass material the Farrelly brothers could compile. Luckily, most of the funny material is handed off to Jason Sudeikis. Owen Wilson, judging from the trailer, doesn't seem to have the comedic chops to carry the movie, so it's a good thing he's got Floyd from 30 Rock along for the ride.

In the end, this is yet another barely memorable and hardly worth mentioning addition to the Farrelly brothers filmography. If it's at least ten years later and you're still riding the wave of There's Something About Mary? Yeah, we might have a problem. Still, I've entertained the idea of renting it for the brief moments of Christina Applegate and Jenna Fischer alone, who have both proven themselves more than capable comediennes. I'm not holding out for much, but my soft spot for some of the cast may win me over on this one, but only on DVD of course.
