'Kaboom' starring Thomas Dekker - trailer review
Kaboom Directed by: Gregg Araki Starring: Thomas Dekker, Haley Bennett, Chris Zylka Rating: NR Release Date: TBD
TRAILER SCORE: 5/10
MY THOUGHTS: Araki's a well known figure in queer cinema, particularly for his sensibilities that can best be described as hedonistic. He's irreverent and crass and ultimately, so real that it's impossible not to watch the characters as they self destruct. Everything I know of Araki and love about him is missing from this trailer. It just seems so unsure of what it's trying to accomplish or what it wants to be that it's difficult to judge what's at stake here. Still, as much as that irritates me, I suppose in the long run that it's only doing what every movie trailer is supposed to be doing. One of the things that as frustrating as it is compelling is the trailer's constant overstimulation. With the colors and the flash of the film itself, it's difficult to piece any coherent story together. But it's not for lack of trying. Hell, I had to re-watch it at least twice just to be able to piece all of the characters together. The visual is overwhelming while the plot seems secondary. this is a definite departure from most of Araki's other stuff that I've seen, but I can't help but curious, anxious, and a little bit nervous about how he strings this all together. Still, the same could be said about one of my favorite Araki movies, Mysterious Skin and the way that he structures almost always seems to have a very definite purpose.
