'Blue Valentine' starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams - trailer review

Blue Valentine Directed by: Derek Cianfrance Starring: Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, Mike Vogel Rating: NR Release Date: January 24, 2011

TRAILER SCORE: 8/10

MY THOUGHTS: Just to give fair warning, it helps to know what the film is about before walking into this trailer, but it also does a surprising job of standing on its own. That being said, I've been anxious for any glimpse of this movie, which charts the ups and downs of the relationship of these two characters. The trailer is kind of goofy and might not be super helpful in getting the movie's name out, but at the same time, I couldn't picture it any other way. Ryan Gosling's singing seems oddly suited for the images as the trailer gives fragments of what seems to be a much richer and fuller story. Then again, my love of most things Gosling (I think it's fair to forgive him for The All New Mickey Mouse Club) may color my feelings for this movie. Michelle Williams has definitely proven herself since the days of Dawson's Creek with a great performance in Wendy and Lucy so when these two acting monuments come together, I can't help but be excited. Granted the topic itself isn't terribly original, even though I do love relationship dramas. I don't expect this to reinvent the genre, but I'm never one to turn down a nice addition to the category. After this somewhat unusual trailer Blue Valentine has proven that it has the right cast and hopefully the right story to make me fall in love with it.
